『唐人』

著者(1847-1919)は Things Chinese, 1892 を著したことで有名な英国の植民地政治家。中国在住35年の間に様々な役職を歴任、中国各地の方言に通じた。そうした経験を基に、北京官話や広東語、客家語等々のテキスト、また、様々な中国研究書を出版した。本書はその代表作の一つである。中国史上の輝かしい2つの王朝「漢」と「唐」の内、中国南部を中心としていた唐王朝の子孫たる華南民衆の生活に焦点をあてたもの。当時、在住46年に及ぶ著者が、見聞の全てを注ぎ込んだ力作である。
