1898年、山東省を租借したドイツ政府による、同地域の歴史学的民俗学的総合研究報告書。租借地の徹底的把握を目的とした非常に包括的な社会科学的研究であり、一地方の地誌としてよりは、総合的中国学研究の一具体例として読まれるべき一冊であると言えよう。パノラマ図版を利用した地理学的報告、民間図像の複製を多く収録しての俗信研究など、資料的価値も高く、ドイツの東洋学研究の手法を知る上でも誠に興味深い貴重な文献である。
