著者ポメ(1658-1699)はフランスの植物学者で、薬種問屋として巨利を得、また、薬物学の専門家として王立植物園の顧問や国王ルイ14世の薬剤師長を勤めた人物。短命で歿したが、彼の生薬目録と呼べる著書は1725年に早くも英訳され、広く影響を与えた。植物・動物・鉱物にわたる浩瀚な記述で、図版を豊富に使用。
