著者はペテルスブルグを出発して、キルギスなど中央アジアのステップ地帯、蒙古を経て、バイカル湖の西側の西シベリアにまで至り、7年間に亘ったその旅を終えている。著者(1799-1861)は、英国の建築家で、A・フンボルトの助言を得て、アジア、ロシアに注目し、この探検旅行を行なった。この他に、『アムール河流域の旅』(Travels in the Regions of the Upper and Lower Amoor, 1860)などを記している。
